Newark Police charge New York man in bank robbery
Newark Police have apprehended and charged a 39-year-old New York man in connection with a robbery on Tuesday, July 12, at the TD Bank at 230 East Delaware Ave. in Newark.
At around 12:17 p.m., July 12, a man entered the TD Bank, wearing a face covering. He presented a note to two different tellers and demanded they place money in bags he provided. They complied by turning over money and the suspect fled the bank in a vehicle.
A short time later, officers observed a person matching the suspect’s description in a vehicle stopped in traffic on West Main Street. They took the suspect into custody at the scene, and evidence related to the robbery was found in the vehicle.
After investigation, Newark Police also identified the man as the suspect in the June 27 bank robbery of the PNC Bank on East Main Street.
Calvin Samuel of Valley Stream, New York, was taken to Newark Police headquarters where he was charged with first degree robbery and wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony for the June 27 robbery and two counts of second degree robbery and two counts of wearing a disguise during the commission of a felony for the July 12 robbery.
Samuel appeared before Justice of the Peace Court #2 by video and was ordered to be held in default of $90,000 cash bail. He was turned over to the custody of the Howard R. Young Correctional Institution in Wilmington, Delaware.
