Newark Police investigate train, car crash

Newark Police are investigating an incident in which a car was struck by a train at West Main Street and New London Road at approximately 2:15 a.m., Saturday, April 23.

Officers arriving at the scene found that a vehicle had been struck by a CSX train traveling eastbound. According to the preliminary investigation, the vehicle was traveling southbound on New London Road, turned right on the train tracks and became disabled. The occupants exited the vehicle, and almost immediately, the CSX train struck the disabled vehicle. Two of the vehicle’s occupants were still near the vehicle and sustained serious, life-threatening injuries. They were taken to Christiana Hospital by Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder ambulance and New Castle County paramedics.

Newark Police were assisted at the scene by the University of Delaware Police Department, Aetna Hose, Hook and Ladder Company, DelDOT and CSX.
