University of Delaware Police have arrested an 18-year-old man and have identified five additional suspects in connection with an incident in which a University of Delaware student and two friends were assaulted around 5 p.m., Friday, March 19.

The victims were walking on Academy Street in Newark when a black vehicle drove by them twice, with the vehicle’s occupants yelling obscenities at them. On a third drive by, someone in the vehicle threw a water bottle at the victims, striking one of them. One of the victims then threw a beverage back at the car.

As the victims continued to walk in the direction of Louis L. Redding Residence Hall, five or six unknown individuals got out of the vehicle and ran toward them, verbally harassing them. The victims continued to walk into Redding Hall and were in the front of the vestibule when the suspects attacked them and took a cell phone from one of them. During the attack, the victims were kicked, punched repeatedly and had their hair pulled. All three received medical treatment after the incident.

Upon learning of the incident, UD Police immediately launched an investigation. Using video surveillance, detectives were able to locate the suspects’ vehicle, track its movement throughout campus and the city of Newark and were able to confirm the vehicle description and obtain its license plate information.

With this information and additional investigative work, UD Police detectives were able to develop a list of suspects and identify everyone responsible for the robbery and assaults.
