In Memoriam: Dominic Wittmann

Campus community remembers pre-veterinary medicine major

Dominic M. Wittmann, a second-year, pre-veterinary medicine major at the University of Delaware from Hamilton, New Jersey, passed away on Nov. 24, 2021, surrounded by his family at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. He was 20.

Mr. Wittmann graduated from Steinert High School in Hamilton in 2019. From an early age, his love of his pets and their well-being drove his educational pursuits. Other interests included playing tennis with National Junior Tennis and Learning of Trenton (NJTL), traveling and going to the beach.

“Our entire community is saddened by the loss of this promising student,” Adam Cantley, dean of students, said. “Dom’s life was marked by his personal courage and a deep commitment to helping others. Our hearts go out to his family and his many friends.”

Luminita Dragulescu, postdoctoral research in the Department of English, said, “Dom Wittmann was my student only for a short while -- a blonde kid with a warm smile. Just a few weeks into the fall semester I received a message from him, letting me know that it was not for lack of interest that he didn't turn in his assignment, but because he needed to get back for a new round of chemotherapy. He hoped he would take the course again in spring. So did I. But then I got the devastating news that this gentle kid passed. In this time of exception and trauma, Dom's passing hit even harder than I expected. That one so young, so full of life and promise was taken from us is unspeakable. I feel so much sorrow for him, for his family, for his friends and colleagues, but mostly for him, for all the life he won't live; for all the happiness and love he won't feel on this earth; for all the possibilities that died with him. Rest in peace, Dominic.”

According to his obituary, “Dominic was quick with a joke, a master of impressions and could always fill a room with laughter. His will to live was bigger than his contagious smile as he dealt with everything that was thrown at him with resolve and determination.”

Mr. Wittmann participated in nonprofit organizations to accelerate discoveries in cancer research. Donations in his honor may be made to MIB Agents or the Osteosarcoma Institute.
