Honors

Suzanne Burton, associate dean for the arts in the College of Arts and Sciences and professor of music education, has been appointed to the Delaware State Arts Council by Gov. John Carney. The council advises the Delaware Division of the Arts on arts policy, arts funding and other matters pertaining to the life of the arts in the state of Delaware.

Publications

Theresa Hessey, digital collections librarian from the Library, Museums and Press, is the author of Photographs from the Newark Historical Society, which was recently published by Arcadia Publishing. Many of the images included in the book depict some of the early businesses that served Newark residents, and document the shift from horse-drawn carriages to automobiles as well as the expansion of the University of Delaware.

Larry Purnell, professor emeritus of nursing, published “Amish Literature Review” in Journal of Nursing and Researchers, Vol. 2, Issue 5, pages 66-83.

Rebecca L. Davis, Miller Family Early Career Professor of History, has written Public Confessions: The Religious Conversions That Changed American Politics, which will be published in October by the University of North Carolina Press. The book examines the controversial religious conversions in the mid-20th century that shaped modern America, including those by such well-known individuals as Clare Boothe Luce, Whittaker Chambers, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe, Muhammad Ali and Chuck Colson.

Presentations

Marie Seymour-Green, associate librarian and electronic resources librarian at the University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press, was an invited speaker and panelist at the OverDrive Digipalooza 2021 conference on Aug. 3, 2021. OverDrive is a global distributor of digital content for libraries and schools, which the Library uses to provide the UD community with access to popular e-books and audiobooks. Seymour-Green was one of two speakers for the session "Bringing Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to Your Workplace or Campus," where she discussed developing and curating UD's online Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Social Justice collection on OverDrive; the increasing popularity of the collection; and the need to include titles of both historical and present-day relevance.

New partnership

The University of Delaware Library, Museums and Press, in collaboration with the Delaware Division of Librarires and partner libraries in New Jersey including the New Jersey State Library, created a partnership now known as the NJ/DE Digital Collective. This partnership allows digital collections from partner libraries to be discovered and used through a single portal bringing together unique and distinctive collections from collections across both states. The collective is now also a partner with the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA), expanding the reach of access to these digital items. New assignment

Ryan Waite, Blue Hen head cross country coach and track and field associate head coach, has been named the interim track and field coach for Delaware. He has been a member of the Blue Hens track and field staff since October 2016. Most recently, Waite coached distance runner Holly Manning to an NCAA East Prelims appearance and top-25 finish in the 800 meters, while Blue Hen alumna Michaela Meyer placed fourth at the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 800m, just one spot shy of qualifying for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, and Mackenzie Jones had the best-ever UD finish at the NCAA Mid-Atlantic Regional Championships in Cross Country.
