Accolades

The New Castle County Chamber of Commerce recently honored College of Health Sciences Dean Kathleen S. Matt with its 2020 Lifetime Achievement Award during its 98th-annual dinner. The event, initially scheduled for March, was held virtually on July 22 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Matt was recognized for her tireless work in developing UD’s Science, Technology and Advanced Research Campus, where the Health Sciences Complex and the Tower at STAR anchor a growing research campus. In a recorded message, Delaware Gov. John Carney acknowledged the depth of Matt’s contributions to advance the healthcare workforce in Delaware and develop the STAR Campus as a hub of innovation. “There can’t be a more appropriate recipient during this difficult time in our state,” Carney said. Dave Brond, vice president of strategy and planning for Aloysius Butler & Clark, introduced Matt and noted the tremendous growth that has occurred in the College of Health Sciences since she joined as dean in 2009. Research expenditures have grown 300% in the past seven years, with the addition of 15 patents and 53 active research awards. In accepting her award, Matt credited the power of partnership. “When you work together as a team, you can accomplish absolutely anything,” said Matt, who earned her bachelor’s and master’s degrees at UD. “Together, we have created a place and a space where our faculty, staff, our students and our community can work together and explore, engage, experience and excel. We can create the future of healthcare here in Delaware.”
