For the Record provides information about recent professional activities and honors of University of Delaware faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Recent publications, honors and new resources include the following:

Publications

Rachel Karchmer-Klein, associate professor in the School of Education, wrote the book Improving Online Teacher Education: Digital Tools and Evidence-Based Practices. Karchmer-Klein outlines how to develop collaborative and interactive online experiences and shares methods for integrating evidence-based instructional practices including think alouds, case-based instruction, peer feedback and field experience. The content is applicable to a variety of situations and content areas in education so that readers can design their own quality learning opportunities for students. It is published by Teachers College Press, Columbia University.

Honors

Deborah Bieler, professor of English, has been honored by the American Educational Research Association (AERA) Division K with its Exemplary Research in Teaching and Teacher Education Award, recognizing her book The Power of Teacher Talk: Promoting Equity and Retention Through Student Interactions. In announcing the award, AERA cited Bieier’s work for its innovative research design, important insights into the work of equity-oriented teachers and critical implications for teacher education. The award, for a journal article or book published between January 2018 and July 2019, gives special consideration to work that advances equity, generates insights that hold promise for ensuring the preparation of teachers who are equipped to serve all students, and reflects the highest standards of methodological rigor. Bieler, who is also a UD alumna, discussed the research for her book in this UDaily article.

New resources

The Institute for Global Studies has developed a new webpage -- UDGlobal at Home – to provide students with a variety of information on how they can stay connected to the world from the comfort of their own homes. The page, which is updated regularly, includes information on planning to study abroad, workshops that can help students prepare for traveling abroad and options for virtual travel experiences.
