Beware 'at-home' sexual assault kits

Delaware attorney general has issued warning about their use

The University of Delaware Office of Equity and Inclusion and University of Delaware Police wish to alert the campus to recent promotion of “at-home” sexual assault evidence kits. Their use is not advised or endorsed by these offices.

Delaware Attorney General Kathy Jennings has issued a statement warning that these kits, which are being marketed to college students in the area, may affect her office’s ability to prosecute subsequent rape charges. “Securing justice and proper care for survivors is one of our highest priorities, and evidence collection is too important to that process to be used as a business opportunity,” Jennings said in the statement.

Support services are available for members of the University of Delaware community who experience any incidents of sexual assault, intimate partner violence or stalking. The University’s Sexual Offense Support (S.O.S.) program provides crisis support, and victim advocacy and is available 24/7 by calling 302-831-1001 or online at www.udel.edu/sos. More survivor options and resources are available at www.udel.edu/sexualmisconduct/getting-help/.
