University community reports honors, publications, presentations, new appointments

For the Record provides information about recent professional activities and achievements of University of Delaware faculty, staff, students and alumni.

Recent new honors, publications, presentations and new appointments include the following:

Honors

The crab cakes at the Courtyard Café in the Courtyard Newark at UD, as prepared by chef Mark Chopko, have been named the “Best of Delaware” for 2019 among the editors’ picks in the July issue of Delaware Today magazine. This is the ninth consecutive year that the Courtyard Café’s crab cakes have won this accolade, which the editors boast honors “the places that shine brightest in the Diamond State.”

During the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics’ year-end faculty and staff meeting on April 26, 2019, Dean Bruce Weber recognized the following Lerner College faculty and staff members for their achievements this past academic year:

  • Lerner College Outstanding Scholar Award: Fie Xie, associate professor of finance;
  • Lerner College Outstanding Teacher Award: Jennifer McCloskey, director, trust management minor;
  • Lerner College Outstanding Outreach/Service Award: Carlos Asarta, director, Center for Economic Education and Entrepreneurship and professor of economics;
  • Lerner College Outstanding Junior Faculty Award: Dustin Sleesman, assistant professor of management;
  • Slocomb Professional Service Award: Michele Mercurio, business administrator, department of business administration;
  • MBA Teaching Award, presented by the MBA Student Association: Bintong Chen, professor of operations managementAdam Fleischhacker, associate professor of operations management; Wendy Smith, professor of management; and
  • Student Choice Teaching Award, presented by the Lerner Student Advisory Board: Roger Coffin, associate professor of practice; Chris Lynch, instructor of finance.

Natalie Hutchings, who received her MFA this year, has been named a recipient of the International Sculpture Center's 2019 Outstanding Student Achievement in Contemporary Sculpture Award, a highly competitive, national award of distinction from the leading voice in the field of international sculpture. This honor includes a feature article in the September/October 2019 issue of Sculpture magazine.

Presentations

Philip Duker, associate professor of music theory, gave a workshop titled "Introduction to Problem-Based Learning" to a group of faculty at Goucher College. The day was part of their weeklong curriculum retreat where they are developing courses centered around complex multidisciplinary problems.

Publications

Peter Weil, associate professor emeritus of anthropology, published “The Typewriter Boys of Summer: 1880-1920” in ETCetera, no. 125, Summer, 2019, pp. 8-17.

New appointments

Dean Bruce Weber of the Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics appointed Andrea Everard, professor of management information systems, as associate dean of undergraduate programs in fall 2019. She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Pittsburgh’s Joseph M. Katz Graduate School of Business in 2003 and joined the Lerner College faculty later that year. She has served as faculty director of the master of science in information systems and technology management (ISTM) program and led the Carol A. Ammon Case Competition for many years.

Lindsey Baltz has moved into a new position as the assistant director for international student career readiness, located in the Office for International Students and Scholars in Elliott Hall. In this new role, she will advise international students on career readiness topics and provide support for this student population in their career development through one-on-one coaching and program development. She will also be working with employers to identify internship and job opportunities for international students to stay in the United States and/or go abroad. Baltz has worked in career services since 2013 and received her master’s degree in adult and higher education from Mary Baldwin University. She is a certified Global Career Development Facilitator and UD Leveraging Equity and Diversity Ally.
