The charge for change

Blue Hens lead the charge for change in the April issue of UD Magazine, now in mailboxes

Imagine that we all had the power to solve some of the problems that plague our state, our nation, our world.

We might be inclined to help sick Delawareans in an age of rising health care costs. Or work for greater diversity by encouraging minorities to seek careers in space. We’d be able to help students trying to recover from addiction, or change U.S. Postal Service regulations that hurt small businesses.

The next issue of UD Magazine shows how many Blue Hens — sometimes by themselves, other times together — have seized the chance to bring positive change to people, policies and communities in Delaware and far beyond.

Feature articles include:

  • A cover story on engineering alumna-turned-medical doctor Kara Odom Walker, who is working to improve Delaware health as secretary of health and human services for the state

  • A look at UD’s Collegiate Recovery Community, and how Blue Hens are coming together for the sake of each other

  • An examination of faculty research around the nation’s growing opioid crisis

  • A profile on sociology alumnus Chad Starks and astrophysicist Bill Matthaeus, whose unlikely partnership seeks to attract more underrepresented students into the space sciences

  • A spotlight on alumnus Jayme Smaldone, who helped overturn a centuries-old postal agreement that hurt small-business owners like himself

The new issue is in mailboxes now and online.
