Optimizing content, user experience to share UD’s story

UDaily, the University of Delaware’s online news source, has launched a refreshed website optimizing content quality and user experience to better serve the University’s many stakeholders on campus and around the world.

UDaily’s mission is to tell the most significant, interesting and timely stories from across the University and share those stories with the widest possible audience. Content will continue to explore innovative research and highlight student, faculty, alumni and staff achievements, inclusive excellence, as well as UD’s important role in local and global communities.

As a refreshed interactive communications platform, UDaily uses articles, photography, video and social media to connect the University’s colleges, institutes and programs to current and prospective students and their families, as well as faculty, staff, alumni, friends, partners, donors and community leaders around the world.

The updated homepage highlights people and programs that are emblematic of UD’s overall excellence and of interest to a wider audience on campus and around the world. Stories that feature videos will have a small video icon on the accompanying homepage image.

Articles are listed in five newly labeled categories: Campus and Community, Research, Nation and World, Culture and Society, and Athletics. When viewed on a desktop or tablet, those labels appear across the page, under each day’s top story-photo package. Each label links to a page featuring current and past content for that category. On a mobile device, the category drop-down arrow appears just under the UDaily logo. Each category page has photography to guide readers to the top three stories.

Content aimed specifically at the UD campus audience is now featured on a page called “Inside UD.” These articles, such as parking notices, training opportunities and information technology updates, are limited to about 250 words. A link from the UDaily homepage takes readers directly to these articles.

Events Calendar

The UDaily story category called “Events” has been discontinued, with the refreshed UDaily placing greater emphasis on the UD Events Calendar, the go-to site for information about what’s happening on the campus and one of UD’s most popular sites with more than 400,000 page views annually. The UDaily homepage includes a box highlighting three upcoming events and a link directly to the full calendar.

UD students, faculty and staff are encouraged to submit events information to the University-wide calendar. Users can sort calendar listings in numerous ways, including types of events, dates, colleges and departments. After logging in, users can personalize the calendar feed they receive and get recommendations. They can also easily share events on social media.
