Presentations

Theodore E. D. Braun, professor emeritus of languages, literatures and cultures, presented the opening paper at the 49th annual meeting of the East-Central American Society for 18th-Century Studies at Staunton, Virginia, on Oct. 25, 2018. Braun's presentation was entitled "The 18th-century Trump: Voltaire! Lies, innuendos, calumnies, fake news! the whole shebang!"

Chandra L. Reedy, professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration and Asian Studies Program, gave an invited lecture at the University of Science and Technology in Beijing entitled "Unusual Technological Innovations in Ceramic Traditions of Sichuan Province” on Nov. 12, 2018.

Margaret Stetz, Mae and Robert Carter Professor of Women's Studies and professor of humanities, delivered a paper at the National Women's Studies Association's conference on Nov. 10, 2018, in Atlanta, Georgia. The theme of this year's conference was "Just Imagine/Imagining Justice." In her paper, titled "Imagining a Resolution for the Korean 'Comfort Women's Issue," Stetz discussed a 2016 South Korean film, Spirits' Homecoming, and focused on how its director and screenwriter, Cho Jung-rae, has imagined a resolution of a seemingly intractable problem: how to create justice for the victims of Japan's World War II-era system of military sexual slavery, many of whom were underage Korean girls.

Publications

Chandra L. Reedy, professor in the School of Public Policy and Administration and Asian Studies Program, had two papers in the proceedings of 2018 International Symposium on Ancient Ceramics – Its Scientific and Technological Insights, published by Shanghai Institute of Ceramics, Chinese Academy of Sciences:  “Technological Achievements of the Xiba Kiln of Leshan City, Sichuan Province,” coauthored by Nicholas J.
