Summer workshop abroad

Graduate students can apply now for START program

The University of Delaware’s Statistical Teaching and Analytics Research Training (START) initiative is seeking applications from full-time graduate students to participate in a workshop abroad from June 14-23, with the location to be determined in January.

The locations selected support partnerships between UD and global hosts that support collaborative learning, scholarship and student mentoring and engagement. START aims to provide a unique global experience learning statistical analysis, while also bridging cultures and promoting diversity. The START initiative will cover all travel and lodging expenses.

During the workshop, UD graduate students work with the global host graduate students on an applied research project, attend presentations by faculty, receive mentoring and participate in social activities.

Eligible graduate students must be enrolled full-time, have successfully completed at least one graduate research methods and/or statistics course at UD, be able to travel internationally and have an expressed interest in using data and statistics to study social and behavioral issues.

Preference will be given to students in the first few years of their program, with limited experiences abroad and/or in need of additional mentoring in the use of data and statistics. Students from historically underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply.

For more information, contact Prof. Agnes Ly at aly@udel.edu. The deadline for submitting complete applications is Feb. 1, 2019, and the program hopes to notify all participants within a week of that date. The online application includes instructions for submitting information in a single PDF document and a letter of support from a faculty mentor, so those must be prepared before beginning the application.
