New partnership lets students learn how to broadcast, produce podcasts

The University of Delaware Community Engagement Initiative has partnered with Radio Newark, Newark’s local talk radio station, to bring a new internship opportunity to UD students.

WIZU 99.9 FM Radio Newark broadcasts internationally: From the streets of downtown Newark to the beaches of Australia. Radio Newark has approximately 65,000-80,000 listeners per month through both FM and Internet streaming. Its content covers everything from jazz poetry to science discoveries, to updates on local road work on popular routes like Cleveland Avenue. Its reach includes both listeners from the U.S. as well as those abroad, with audiences from (but not limited to) New Zealand, Japan, Indonesia, Great Britain, Germany, France, Iran, Canada, China, India and Barbados.

This production internship provides an opportunity for students to learn how talk radio is produced, give them the skills they need to produce their own content and create short (five to seven minute) podcasts for broadcast. With Radio Newark reaching households internationally, students have the opportunity to engage both local and global communities. It is expected that each intern will produce at least one story during the semester; though it will be possible to create more.

Interested students must attend a two-hour training from 6:30-8:30 p.m., Monday, Oct. 2, in Room A of the Student Multimedia Center in the Morris Library. At this training, students will learn the basics of talk radio and broadcasting and will be introduced to simple editing software. From there, they will gain the skills to interview, record, edit and produce short podcasts for submission to Radio Newark. Podcasts will be broadcast at the discretion of Radio Newark staff.

To attend the Oct. 2 training, RSVP to vallane@udel.edu by Friday, Sept. 29.

Those seeking more information may contact Valerie Lane at vallane@udel.edu or 302-831-8672.

This internship opportunity is a good fit for those who love storytelling and want to engage in the wider community.
