Sept. 27: Psychology colloquium

First speaker to discuss gender, academic engagement

The University of Delaware’s Department of Psychological and Brain Sciences will begin its fall colloquium series with a talk about gender and academic engagement at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Sept. 27, in 102 Colburn Lab.

The series, which will continue with two more talks this semester, is free and open to the public.

It honors the upcoming retirement of Brian P. Ackerman, professor of psychological and brain sciences, who has been a member of the UD faculty since 1979.

The first guest speaker is Bonita London, associate professor of psychology at Stony Brook University, whose talk is titled “Barriers and Bridges to Academic Engagement: Gender Rejection Sensitivity and Identity Compatibility Among Women.”

The other talks in the colloquium series, also from 4-5 p.m. on Wednesdays in 102 Colburn Lab, are:

Oct. 11—Craig Ferris, professor of psychology and pharmaceutical sciences at Northeastern University, will speak about “Stress, Oxytocin, and Vasopressin Regulation of Emotion: Insights from fMRI.”

Oct. 25--Eleanor Brown, professor of psychology at West Chester University, who earned her doctorate at UD in 2005, will speak on “More than Money: Accounting for Diversity in Developmental Outcomes for Children in Poverty.”
