Oct. 4: Considering law school?

Program offers students insights into law school, legal practice

The University of Delaware Legal Studies Program will host a two-part informational program beginning at 4 p.m., Wednesday, Oct. 4, for students interested in law school.

The sessions, “Considering Law School?” and “What’s It Like to Practice Law?” will be held back to back in 101 Recitation Hall on UD’s Newark campus.

“Considering Law School?” will be led by Wayne Batchis, associate professor and director of legal studies, who will discuss the ins and outs of applying to law school and what to expect.

Batchis, who joined the department in 2008, specializes in American law with a focus on Constitutional law, the First Amendment and the democratic process. He is currently researching the intersection of free speech jurisprudence and political ideology.

His session on Oct. 4, scheduled for 4 p.m. to 4:45 p.m., will include information on the competitiveness of law school and the career path one can take; tips on writing effective personal statements and the application process; preparing for the Law School Admission Test (LSAT); and financing a legal education. The goal of the event is to educate students on the realities of law school and whether it’s right for them.

“What’s It Like to Practice Law?” will take a look at women and the difficulties they face in breaking the glass ceiling of equity partnership at big law firms. Several women will discuss each of their individual experiences in getting to where they are today.

Panelists include Johnna Darby, Shaw Fishman and Glantz, the panel moderator; Pamela Politis, executive director, U.S. Legal, Incyte Corp.; Brya Keilson, Office of the United States Trustee, District of Delaware; Leigh-Anne Raport, The Vanguard Group; Reneta L. Green Streett, associate, Morris James; and Shanti M. Katona, shareholder, Polsinelli.

All of the panelists are practicing or have at one point practiced law in Delaware. They will discuss what it’s like to work in their respective settings and answer questions from the audience.

Questions for the panelists can also be emailed in advance to johnnadarby@gmail.com. The senders’ identities will be kept confidential unless otherwise instructed in the email.
