Redding Lecture to be rescheduled

‘Hidden Figures’ author Margot Lee Shetterly to visit campus in fall

Writer, researcher and entrepreneur Margot Lee Shetterly will reschedule a planned visit to the University of Delaware to deliver the annual Louis L. Redding Lecture during the fall of 2017.

Her visit, originaly scheduled on Tuesday, March 14, was canceled due to winter storm Stella, which caused UD to close for the day and suspend classes and activities.

The University will announce the details of her rescheduled visit after the start of the fall semester. More than 800 people registered for the March 14 lecture. Those who registered for the event will receive email notification when the new date has been secured.

Shetterly is the author of Hidden Figures: The American Dream and the Untold Story of the Black Women Mathematicians Who Helped Win the Space Race. The New York Times bestseller was turned into a film starring Taraji P. Henson (of Empire), Octavia Spencer, Janelle Monae, Kirsten Dunst and Kevin Costner.

Shetterly will talk about race, gender, science and the history of technology. She will show the surprising ways that women and people of color have contributed to American innovation while pursuing the American Dream.

The Louis L. Redding Lecture honors the late civil rights pioneer, a prominent lawyer in Wilmington, Delaware, whose work led to educational opportunities for African American students in the state and nation. In 2013, the University dedicated a new residence hall named in his honor.
