Blue Hens Delgado, de Villardi selected in 2017 MLS SuperDraft
History continues to be made this season for the University of Delaware men’s soccer team as the program had two players selected in the second round of the 2017 MLS SuperDraft.
Senior Guillermo Delgado was selected 27th by the Chicago Fire and Thomas de Villardi was selected 42nd by Minnesota United.
The pair join Evans Frimpong, of the Class of 2012, as the lone Blue Hens to ever be drafted by MLS clubs. Frimpong was selected ninth overall in the 2012 MLS Supplemental Draft by the Chicago Fire. He most recently was a member of the Oklahoma City Energy and Puerto Rico FC.
“Chicago is a beautiful city; they have a great coaching staff,” Delgado said. “I’m excited and thrilled to give everything I can on the field. I had a tremendous four years at Delaware. Thank you to my coaches and my teammates. Without them, I wouldn’t be able to be here and pursue my dream of playing soccer for a living.”
One of 66 prospects to take part in the 2017 adidas MLS Player Combine this week, Delgado led Team Control to a 2-1-0 record and tallied one goal in 131 minutes played.
“I am thrilled for Guillermo,” said UD head coach Ian Hennessy. “It's a wonderful honor to be drafted in what has been a very exciting MLS SuperDraft today. It's the perfect end to a record-setting year and career that saw him end as the top active scorer in the NCAA. We couldn't be prouder of him. With this MLS achievement for a UD player, I want to acknowledge the work of my assistants Jon Scheer and Roberto Gimenez who did so much work recruiting Guillermo and helping him mature as a player over a terrific college career at the University of Delaware.”
Delgado, the 2016 Colonial Athletic Association player of the year, earned NSCAA All-America recognition for the fourth consecutive year, landing a spot on the third team this past season. He also received his fourth consecutive selection to the All-CAA first team and fourth straight spot on the NSCAA All-Midwest Region first team after posting 12 goals, eight assists and 32 points to lead the Blue Hens to the CAA championship and a berth in the NCAA tournament.
The nation's active career leader in points (117) and goals (49) finished his four-year career in a Blue Hens uniform as the school's all-time leader in five statistical categories: points, goals, assists (19), game-winning goals (17) and shots (282). In addition, Delgado made his mark in the CAA record book, finishing his career tied for fifth all-time in goal and sixth in points, becoming the first player since 2003 to record at least 40 goals and 100 points.
De Villardi, an All-Midwest Region third team selection last season, earned a spot on the second team this year. He wrapped his career in a Blue Hens uniform as a two-time All-CAA first team honoree after transferring to UD following his sophomore campaign. The midfielder registered eight points on two goals and three assists for the Blue Hens.
“Thomas is one of the most underrated players in this year’s draft,” Hennessy said. “He has been a pleasure to work with and I believe he has all the tools to push on at the next level and I and delighted that this is shared by the Minnesota organization.”
UD joins UCLA, Syracuse, Connecticut, Louisville, Denver, Akron, Wake Forest and North Carolina as the schools to receive multiple picks in the SuperDraft.
“It has been a historic draft for the University of Delaware men’s soccer team and I hope it can inspire recruits to a university where you can not only receive a first class education but also serve as a path to a professional playing career in the MLS," Hennessy said.
This past season, Delgado and de Villardi led the Blue Hens to a mark of 12-8-1 while capturing the CAA title and advancing to the NCAA tournament.
