Student Life supports students’ mental, emotional, physical well-being

Throughout the year and particularly as exams approach, students in need can take advantage of several support services throughout the University of Delaware Division of Student Life. Faculty and staff are encouraged to become familiar with available amenities so that they may support students who do not seem to be at their best.

“With the UD Helpline, resources have never been more accessible but it’s up to all of us to help students identify when they need help and where they can find it,” said Charles Beale, director of Center for Counseling and Student Development. “Whether one recognizes the effects or not, behaviors such as using drugs or alcohol, ignoring sleep or nutrition recommendations, or trying to skate by in class take a toll on one’s mental and physical well-being and can be indicative of larger issues that should be addressed.”

While many students seek out counseling or consultation in recognition of a problem that they are facing, Student Life staff estimate that many more mistakenly assume their experiences are normal or healthy. Professionals throughout the division aim to help students articulate how their behaviors impact their wellness and identify opportunities to improve their UD experience.

The following services are available to all full-time undergraduate students:

• Individual and group counseling through the Center for Counseling and Student Development in 261 Perkins Student Center.

• Consultation, advocacy and resources through the Office of the Dean of Students in 101 Hullihen Hall.

• Medical treatment and referrals through Student Health Services in Laurel Hall.

• Substance abuse assistance and survivor support through Student Wellness and Health Promotion at 231 South College Avenue.

• Mental health professionals and sexual offense support advocates available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year by calling the UD Helpline at 302-831-1001.

“Ultimately, we’re here to help students reach their full potential”, said Nancy Chase, director of Student Wellness and Health Promotion. “Attempting self-help is normal when one recognizes that something’s not right, but after a reasonable amount of effort or time has been expended, students should not be timid about using resources that exist to support their personal wellness and academic success and encouraging their peers to do the same.”

The Division of Student Life includes the Career Services Center, Center for Black Culture, Center for Counseling and Student Development, New Student Orientation, Office of the Dean of Students, Office of Student Conduct, Residence Life and Housing, Student Health Services, Student Services for Athletes, Student Wellness and Health Promotion, and the University Student Centers.
