University community reports recent announcements, promotions
For the Record provides information about recent professional activities of University of Delaware faculty, staff, students and alumni.
Recent announcements, media, presentations and promotions include the following:
Announcements
Sheila Browne, assistant professor of viola, has joined the Serafin String Quartet, the quartet-in-residence at the University. She replaces Esme Allen-Creighton, assistant professor of viola, who stepped down after four years with the quartet to pursue a degree in music therapy. Browne joins both the UD faculty and the quartet after 10 years at the University of North Carolina School for the Arts.
Conferences
Neil C. Sturchio, professor and chair of geological sciences in the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, was invited to participate in a Consultants' Workshop at the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) headquarters on the topic of "Underground Production of C-14 by Cluster Decay." This workshop, which involved a small group of scientific experts from Germany, Switzerland, Israel, Canada and the United States, was organized by the Isotope Hydrology Laboratory of the IAEA, to help resolve complexities encountered in the application of radiocarbon measurements to the hydrology of very old groundwater aquifers. It took place in Vienna, Austria, on July 26-27, and a technical report documenting the findings and recommendations of the group will be produced for public release.
Media
Disaster Research Center directors Tricia Wachtendorf and James Kendra and their recently released book American Dunkirk: The Waterborne Evacuation of Manhattan on 9/11 were featured in a story by Downtown Express. Also, Wachtendorf was quoted in the magazine Governing regarding the challenges associated with some spontaneous donations after disaster events.
Presentations
Trevor A. Dawes, vice provost for libraries and museums and May Morris University Librarian, University of Delaware Library, was the opening keynote speaker at the Summer Institute for the librarians at the University of Notre Dame on Aug. 1, in Notre Dame, Indiana. Dawes' presentation focused on the new roles for librarians and the value libraries add to the academic mission.
Promotions
The University of Delaware Police Department has announced recent promotions. Peter Lenhoff was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and is now the Administrative Division commander; J. Michael Maier was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and is now the Special Units Division commander; Hugh Ferrill was promoted to the rank of lieutenant and is now the Patrol Division commander; Anthony Battle was promoted to the rank of sergeant and is now the patrol shift supervisor for A Squad; Richard Mantici was promoted to the rank of master corporal and is now an assistant supervisor in the Patrol Division; and Raushan Rich was promoted to the rank of master corporal assigned to the Community Resource Unit as the supervisor of the UDPD Student Programs.
