International partnerships

This summer, a delegation from South Korea traveled the more than 7,000 miles from Yeungnam University to the University of Delaware to sign an official memorandum of understanding and to explore future collaboration between the two universities.

Among those in the delegation from Yeungnam University were President Seok Kyun Noh and Seung-Hoon Shin, vice president for external cooperation. Representing the University of Delaware were President Dennis Assanis; Charles Riordan, deputy provost for research and scholarship; Lynn Okagaki, deputy provost; Ravi Ammigan, interim associate deputy provost for international programs; Klaus Theopold, professor of chemistry and biochemistry; William Shafarman, associate professor of materials science and engineering; and Dan Bottomley, associate director for global partnerships and programs.

While the UD-Yeungnam tie dates back to the 1980s, when now-President Noh sat as a student in Theopold’s chemistry courses at Cornell University, UD’s Institute for Energy Conversion has maintained an active collaboration with Yeungnam since 2010. UD has also annually hosted one graduate student from Yeungnam University for a year of research in the field of chemical engineering.

News

P. Gabrielle Foreman, Ned B. Allen Professor of English and faculty director of the Colored Conventions Project, was featured in an Aug. 4 article in The New York Times about the Colored Conventions Project, which looks at African American political activism in the 19th century. The project’s team of 25 includes graduate student leaders, undergraduate researchers and professional librarians and its members include majors and minors from a score of departments. The project is housed at the University of Delaware Library.

Performances

Jennifer M. Barker, professor of music, performed a concert as a member of Caraid Trì (Three Friends) at the Victoria International Arts Festival in Gozo, Malta, in July. The concert consisted of music composed by Barker between 2000 and 2015, much of it reflecting her Scottish heritage. A review of the concert called it “unique and delightful” and praised Barker, who was also the group’s pianist, for “forging a lovely, intimate rapport with the audience” by explaining the nature and inspiration for her compositions.

Presentations

Trevor A. Dawes, vice provost for libraries and Museums and May Morris University Librarian, co-presented about the work and recommendations of the American Library Association's (ALA) Task Force on Equity, Diversity and Inclusion on Aug. 9 and also served as co-chair of the National Diversity in Libraries Conference at the University of California, Los Angeles.

Megan Gaffney, associate librarian, Interlibrary Loan, Access Services Department, University of Delaware Library, presented "Interlibrary Loan between the United States and Latin America: The Current Landscape," International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) Document Delivery and Resource Sharing Satellite meeting, Aug. 10, Washington, D.C.
