The University of Delaware is known for their prestigious Department of Hospitality and Sport Business Management in the Alfred Lerner College of Business & Economics, including the event management minor.

This year, seniors in the program are planning an inaugural event, Hospitality Heroes: Futures & Founders Celebration (also known as the HOSPYs) to honor graduating students and supporters of the department on Tuesday, April 30 in the Newark Courtyard Marriott at 6 p.m.

This opportunity has provided hands-on experience for the eight students in the practicum course. Senior hospitality business management major and event management minor Rachel Pappa has been diligently preparing for the HOSPYs, an event dedicated to honoring graduating students and supporters of the hospitality program at the UD. Pappa explains that it’s a culmination of hard work and dedication, organized and executed entirely by students in the event practicum class with an exciting lineup prepared for all attendees.

“Guests can expect live entertainment, food from favorite Newark restaurants, cocktail and mocktail pairings, a silent auction, live artists, a photo booth and more,” she said.

But beyond the festivities, there’s a meaningful cause being supported. The event management practicum class is proud to collaborate with The Wardrobe, an organization providing professional clothing to those facing employment barriers. Guests are encouraged to contribute by donating items such as casual and professional menswear, plus size womenswear, denim jeans and new toiletries.

For those interested in joining the celebration, follow @UDHospitalityHeroes on Instagram for more information about vendors, performers and speakers that’ll be at the event. Students can purchase tickets for $35 at udel.edu/thehospys

As the countdown to the HOSPYs begins, it’s clear that this event is not just a celebration; it’s a testament to hard work, passion and the potential careers ahead for all involved.

“This class has really helped me with my communication skills,” Pappa shared. “Constantly communicating with vendors in a professional manner has helped me get a glimpse into what my future in the hospitality field could look like.”
