In this blog series "Discussing Diversity," Thermo Systems Vice President of Human Resources Sueann Snodgrass answers questions about diversity, equity and inclusion and how Thermo Systems contributes to a welcoming workplace environment for all.

What is the overall mission of Thermo Systems?

Thermo Systems is dedicated to creating an environment of diversity and inclusivity at all levels of our organization. We understand that recruiting, development, training and retention are vital to fostering a diverse and inclusive workplace. At Thermo Systems, diversity and inclusion is not only a company initiative; we take it a step further and celebrate each other's individuality. We know that each person, regardless of race, color, religion, gender, gender identity or expression, sexual orientation, national origin, genetics, disability, age or veteran status, will enhance our company’s knowledge and culture through their unique experiences and skillsets.

How do you incorporate values of diversity, equity and inclusion in the workplace?

Thermo Systems incorporates values of diversity, equity and inclusion by leading by example. During our hiring process, we look for candidates that fit within Thermo’s culture because our team’s strong bond, collaborative mindset and positive outlook are all attributes that ensure project success for our customers and job satisfaction for our team members.

What DE&I programs or initiatives does the company have in place?

  • We provide annual diversity training for all Thermo Systems employees.
  • We ensure that each employee understands what diversity and inclusion means and treats others with dignity and respect at all times.
  • We interview and recruit diverse employees.
  • We promote a collaborative environment for all employees.
  • We ensure that all employees are included in workplace projects and meetings, and we value their feedback regardless of education, skill sets, experiences and knowledge.
  • We created a veteran’s initiative that recruits, hires and provides transitional support.
  • We run internal quarterly meetings for women in engineering.
  • We keep company communications gender-neutral.
  • We ensure equal pay across the company.

How do you ensure that all employees feel welcome, including new hires and interns?

Thermo welcomes all new employees by creating an inclusive onboarding plan for each new hire, regardless of their starting position or title. This way, they can meet as many team members as possible and learn about all the programs and events held within the company. The connection with their peers helps to ensure all feel welcome. We also complete new hire and pulse surveys to analyze the culture to ensure a welcoming environment.

Why do you think it’s important to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace environment?

At Thermo, we believe a diverse and inclusive workplace is critical to employee engagement. When employees feel valued and respected, they will be motivated to engage and collaborate with their peers and customers. Our diverse team is from various backgrounds, cultures and experiences, bringing broader ideas and new perspectives. The unique inclusive culture at Thermo Systems strengthens our team by offering an environment where all team members can thrive.

What are you looking for in UD students who want to intern or work at your company? How can they stand out when speaking with your recruiters at our career fairs?

Thermo Systems is looking for well-rounded students to intern or work at our company. This would include having great communication and people skills. Being able to collaborate is also very important because that’s how we are more efficient and is representative of our culture.

A great way to stand out is researching Thermo in advance and being prepared to want to learn more about our core business. Looking professional, asking questions and showing your confidence makes a huge impact!

Are you currently hiring interns or entry-level employees?

Yes! We're hiring globally, and we'll be looking to fill roles in engineering, IT, sales, marketing and more. We have several opportunities for control systems internships, as well. You can find all open positions on our main careers page at thermosystems.com/careers.

Is there anything else UD students should know about your organization?

As a systems integrator, Thermo Systems employs engineers, technicians and many other professionals to service our customers in the life sciences, mission critical and district energy industries. We have a number of UD graduates on our team that have embraced the Thermo culture and are on the way to becoming leaders in our industry. We value a culture of teamwork, exceeding customer expectations, and success—both personal and professional.

Cory Notaro is a senior sales manager and one of the UD alumni on our team who loves sharing his Thermo story. “Automation and control system technology was not something that was on my radar during my time studying engineering at the University of Delaware," Notaro says. "I joined Thermo Systems as a control systems engineer in 2010 and in my 12 years here, I have transitioned into a management role in our business development group. I have had the opportunity to learn from experts in the industry, travel globally, meet people from all cultures and backgrounds and develop experience in multiple different industries and technologies. I have enjoyed contributing to Thermo’s growth and seeing our organization expand – in numbers, geographically and culturally.”
