In this new blog series "Discussing Diversity," Kohl’s Senior Operations Manager Charles Boyd answers questions about diversity, equity and inclusion and how Kohl’s contributes to a welcoming workplace environment for all.
What is the overall mission of Kohl’s?
The overall mission of Kohl’s is to provide a safe working environment, where everyone can be their authentic selves. We foster that type of environment through our diversity, equity and inclusion work within our organization. We incorporate these values by promoting diversity in our hiring process, engagement initiatives and development opportunities. We foster inclusion by having associates from different backgrounds feel comfortable bringing ideas and suggestions to make our organization the best it can be.
What DE&I programs or initiatives does the company have in place?
One DE&I program we have is our Business Resource Groups (BRGs). We have eight that span several protected classes. We also have started diversity recruiting initiatives where we recruit students from HSIs (Hispanic Serving Institutions) and HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities), along with traditional PWIs (Predominantly White Institutions).
How do you ensure that all employees feel welcome, including new hires and interns?
We promote a family atmosphere here at Kohl’s. We make our new hires feel like part of our family on day one through our orientation process and being greeted by their supervisors on the first day. With our interns, we reach out to them before they come on board to welcome them. We greet them with cool welcome signs on their first day.
Why do you think it’s important to foster a diverse and inclusive workplace environment?
Diversity and inclusion are important in the workplace because of the times we live in. People want to be comfortable not just off the clock, but at work, too! With the need to be authentic at all times, Kohl’s prides itself on providing a safe space to ensure that. When associates are comfortable, this tends to translate in their performance, attitude and work ethic.
What are you looking for in UD students who want to intern or work at your company? How can they stand out when speaking with your recruiters at our career fairs?
Kohl’s looks to provide a space where the best and brightest can thrive. What we would want from an intern is to bring that passion and work ethic that got them to where they are at UD. They can stand out when talking to recruiters by displaying that passion, expressing wanting the opportunity and being able to articulate the leadership skills they have acquired at UD.
Are you currently hiring interns or entry-level employees?
Yes, we are currently hiring eFulfillment Center leadership management interns for Summer 2022. The Leadership Management Internship at a Kohl’s eCommerce Fulfillment Center (EFC) provides a challenging 10-week experience during which you will obtain hands-on experience in the many facets of distribution operations. From distribution to operations to developing a team, as a leadership management intern you will be exposed to the behind the scenes of managing a high-volume online fulfillment center. Learn how a Kohls.com order goes from the click of a button to our customer’s front door. Additional information can be found on Handshake and at careers.kohls.com/internships.
Is there anything else UD students should know about your organization?
One last thing I’d like to mention to all UD students is that “Kohl’s Cares'' is more than just a tagline. It is organic and authentic. Whether it be through our DE&I initiatives, volunteer work, BRG’s or work-life balance, it is not just lip service with us. Kohl’s understands the importance of incentives outside of a check. We understand how dynamic and different people are, and we celebrate that!
