Certificate course returns this fall with instructor-led online learning

The University of Delaware’s Division of Professional and Continuing Studies (UD PCS) is enrolling for its Foundations of Brewing Science and Brewery Operations Certificate course, a 10-week live-online program designed for both hobbyists and aspiring professionals that starts Sept. 24.

Led by veteran brewmaster Brad Adelson, the course covers essential brewing topics including beer styles, raw materials, operations, safety, packaging and quality control. Students also have the opportunity to participate in an in-person session at Delaware Park’s 1937 Brewing Company, gaining hands-on experience in a working brewery.

Francisco Rivera, a Philadelphia-based home brewer who completed the course in the spring, praised the program for its depth and accessibility.

“I’ve been brewing at home for eight years, mostly learning through trial and error,” Rivera said. “But I wanted to understand the science behind it and the business side too. This course gave me both.”

Rivera found the online format ideal for balancing family life and learning.

“Being able to attend from home was a huge plus,” he said. “But the in-person brewery visit was a real treat. The venue was amazing, and it was great to meet my classmates in person.”

He also highlighted Adelson’s teaching style: “Brad is incredibly knowledgeable and has a scientific mindset, but he also knows how to make the material accessible to everyone.”

Upon completion, students earn a digital badge and practical skills that translate directly into brewery roles. Learn more or register at pcs.udel.edu/brewing.
