Feb. 5, 2026: Global scholars examine research in an era of global uncertainty

Grand challenges such as political polarization, climate change, geopolitical instability and artificial intelligence are reshaping society — and fundamentally altering the landscape of academic research. Research at a Crossroads: Scholarship in an Era of Grand Challenges will invite faculty, researchers and graduate students to explore what these shifts mean for the future of scholarly work across disciplines.

The event will take place on Thursday, Feb. 5,  from 4-5:30 p.m. in the Lerner Atrium. The program will feature an internationally recognized panel followed by facilitated small-group reflections designed to foster dialogue, collaboration and shared learning.

Panelists include Joel Gehman, Lindner-Gambal Professor of Business Ethics at George Washington University; Silviya Svejenova, professor at Copenhagen Business School; and Emily Block, associate professor at the Alberta Business School. The panel will be moderated by Wendy Smith, Dana J. Johnson Professor of Management at the University of Delaware’s Alfred Lerner College of Business and Economics.

The event will begin with a fireside chat-style panel discussion from 4-4:30 p.m., during which panelists will examine how scholars can study complex, contested and fast-moving phenomena while maintaining rigor, relevance and ethical responsibility. From 4:30–5 p.m., participants will take part in facilitated table discussions led by members of the Organization and Management Theory community, offering an opportunity to reflect on the panel’s themes and share perspectives. A reception and networking session will conclude the event from 5-5:30 p.m.

The event is sponsored by the Lerner Faculty Research Showcase and the Business Administration Department’s Management area.
