Jeff MacSwan of the University of Maryland will present on multilingual learners and translanguaging
Join University of Delaware’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) for a colloquium with Jeff MacSwan, professor of applied linguistics and language education at the University of Maryland, from 1:50 to 2:50 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25, in room 205 of Willard Hall Education Building.
In this talk, MacSwan will trace the history of translanguaging theory. With reference to empirical research on codeswitching, or bilingual language mixing, McSwan will also draw conclusions about the organization of bilingual grammar as an integrated cognitive system that allows speakers to make use of the full range of their linguistic repertoires. He will also connect these topics to education policy and social justice.
McSwan’s colloquium is part of a year-long series hosted by CEHD’s School of Education. Speakers both internal and external to UD share their research and engage with faculty and students.
The colloquium is free and open to the public. Audience members are also welcome to participate in a discussion with the speaker following the colloquium.
