Storage service changes at UD

Google and Microsoft’s storage limits: What UD needs to know

In 2021, Google introduced a change that ended unlimited storage for higher education institutions. Starting in late 2024, Google will enforce storage limits. Microsoft also announced changes to its higher education licensing in August 2023, which will affect Microsoft 365 storage in mid-2024.

To accommodate Google’s storage terms, new storage limits, determined by an individual’s affiliation with the University, will be put into place. Active faculty, staff and students will have a default storage limit of 50 GB with options to request limited increases without charge. Faculty and staff may also take advantage of a paid option for additional storage space for Shared Drives exceeding 500 GB. In addition, UD alumni will have a 15 GB limit, and retirees will be given a 50 GB limit.

To immediately mitigate the current storage growth in UD’s Microsoft instance, a temporary storage limit will be applied to all Microsoft services on Feb. 27, 2024. In mid-2024 storage limits will then be set to new service defaults for Exchange email (25 GB), OneDrive (100 GB), and Teams and SharePoint sites (50 GB). There are options for increasing storage limits for some services up to 500 GB without charge. Faculty and staff using Teams or SharePoint may also pay for additional storage space.

The most effective approach for reducing your storage usage is to take steps to manage your data, such as targeting large or duplicate files for deletion. Those who are above the maximum storage limit for any of these services will be receiving communications from UD Information Technologies with more information.
