Event to examine the impact of machines on free expression

Actor Tom Hanks in an ad promoting dental services? Rapper Nicki Minaj and actor Tom Holland confront Mark Zuckerberg about breaking into their home? Actor Jim Carrey stars in a remake of the 1980 movie The Shining? All are deepfakes created by AI.

What happens to free expression in a time when anyone’s likeness and voice can be generated by a machine?

Nadine Farid Johnson, managing director of PEN America’s Washington office and Free Expression program will discuss deepfakes and other critical issues surrounding generative artificial intelligence and free speech during Speech in the Machine: Generative AI's Implications for Free Expression on Tuesday, Oct. 17, at 7 p.m. in Trabant Multipurpose room C. Hosted by the Department of Communication, the event is being held to mark Free Speech Week.

Registration is required.

The event is also part of the department’s 50th anniversary. In 2023-2024 the Department of Communication is celebrating five decades of researching and teaching about the fundamental and essential role communication plays in daily life.
