Suspect flees, hits witness

Newark Police are investigating a theft of credit cards that occurred around 12:45 p.m., Sunday, Sept. 29, at a restaurant on East Main Street.

A woman told police that she was sitting at a table in the restaurant when she felt her purse move. She turned to find her credit cards were missing, and as she told her companions that her cards were missing, a woman seated at a table behind her stood up and left the business.

Newark Police released this surveillance photo of the suspect.

The victim and members of the group she was with went to confront the suspect. When they began to speak with the suspect, she ran eastbound on East Main Street. One of the members of the group, a 19-year-old woman, caught up with the suspect in the area of East Main Street and Center Street. The suspect then punched the woman in the face and ran north on Center Street to eastbound New Street.  The victim did not sustain any physical injury and did not require medical treatment.

The suspect is described as a black female wearing a white hat, white Adidas shirt, gray pants and white shoes. Newark Police have released a surveillance photo of the suspect.

Anyone with information about this incident is asked to call Officer Maiura at 302-366-7100 ext. 3495 or email amaiura@newark.de.us. Additional methods for providing information to Newark Police can be found on the department’s tips page, where reward information may also be available.
