Fire safety training

Safety course with fire survivors offered for residence hall students, staff

Students and staff in University of Delaware residence halls are invited to participate in a special fire safety course being presented this month by the Delaware State Fire School in Dover.

Featured speakers at the course will be Alvaro Llanos and Shawn Simons, who survived the devastating fire at Seton Hall University in 2000 that killed three students and injured many more. The program is designed to inspire and motivate students, professionals and emergency services personnel. In addition to increasing awareness of fire safety concepts, the course will examine the lasting and devastating effect fire can have on its victims.

The course will be held from 9 a.m.-noon, Saturday, Feb. 24, at the Delaware State Fire School, 1461 Chestnut Grove Rd., Dover. Registration must be completed by Feb. 16.

UD’s Environmental Health and Safety office is making transportation arrangements for any UD resident student or staff member who wishes to attend this free event.

Those interested in attending should contact Kevin T. McSweeney, fire marshal at UD, at kmcsween@udel.edu. He is coordinating UD participation at this event.
