April 28: What does a diplomat do?

U.S. diplomat to share career insights with UD students

On Friday, April 28, starting at 3 p.m. in 205 Gore Hall, University of Delaware undergraduate and graduate students will have the opportunity to learn more about the exciting world of a senior U.S. diplomat and the importance of language skills to multiple career paths.

During his lecture, “What Does a Diplomat Do?,” Lloyd Neighbors, a senior diplomat from the U.S. Department of State — with more than 30 years of experience — will share his insights about the importance of studying a foreign language, what it means to be a diplomat, how to prepare for a career in foreign service and what kinds of benefits such a career will yield.

His talk is designed to not only help motivate language students and help open up career opportunities for them, but also will benefit undergraduate and graduate students in other areas of study in terms of career planning. In addition to foreign service and international development, language skills are critical to tourism, business, industry and education, among other fields.

The lecture is sponsored by the University of Delaware Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures and the Confucius Institute.
