Aug. 25: 'Bias in the Gallery'

Delaware Art Museum to host discussions around exhibition

In association with the exhibition “Dark Humor: African American Art from the University Museums, University of Delaware,” the Delaware Art Museum in Wilmington has announced that it will host several exciting programs.

Programs will begin at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, Aug. 25, with “Real Talk: Cultural Bias in the Gallery.”

The discussion will feature Ivan Henderson, curator of education and outreach at University Museums, and Saralyn Rosenfield, director of education, who will co-facilitate a candid conversation on how perspectives influence experience when viewing subversive works of art in “Dark Humor.”

They will consider questions such as why does talking about race in art feel taboo and how can people confront their own biases when looking at art?

Other programs are as follows:

• Sept. 8, 6 p.m.: Gallery talk with Tiffany Barber, a doctoral candidate at University of Rochester and Alfred Appel Jr. Curatorial Fellow at the Delaware Art Museum who curated the exhibition. Barber will share her research and insights on contemporary black artists who use subversive humor. Free. Delaware Art Museum is open free on Thursday evenings from 4-8 p.m.

• Sept. 11, 1 p.m.: Panel discussion with Joyce J. Scott, Lori Crawford and Tiffany Barber around how contemporary black artists use subversive humor in art. Moderated by Julie McGee, curator of African American art, University Museums, and associate professor of Black American Studies. Free for members and students with ID, $5 for non-members.

• Sept. 22, 6 p.m.: Film screening and discussion of Spike Lee’s Bamboozled. Written and directed by Spike Lee, Bamboozled is a satirical film about a modern televised minstrel show featuring actors donning blackface makeup and the violent fallout from the show's success. Exhibiting artist and UD art and design professor Peter Williams will facilitate a discussion around themes represented in the film and the “Dark Humor” exhibition. Free. Food from Toscana available for purchase in the Thronson Café.
