Presentations

Terry Babcock-Lumish, visiting scholar in the School of Public Policy and Administration, spoke at the Brookings Institution's annual John Hazen White Forum, which convenes leaders from academia, business and government to discuss and identify solutions to the United States’ most pressing challenges. After years of falling output and a diminishing percentage of the labor force, U.S. manufacturing is enjoying a resurgence. Babcock-Lumish joined colleagues in considering the role of technological innovation for American competitiveness in the face of an escalating global trade war. 

Sheng Lu, associate professor of fashion and apparel studies, presented at the United States International Trade Commission (USITC) Industries Analysis Seminar Series, July 11, 2018, in Washington, D.C. The presentation, titled “Apparel Sourcing Strategy and Trade Policy,” shared Lu’s latest research findings regarding the impacts of U.S. free trade agreement, particularly the textile and apparel specific rules of origin provisions, on U.S. apparel firms’ sourcing behaviors. He also presented at the United States Fashion Industry Association (USFIA) Washington Trade Symposium July 12, 2018, on Capitol Hill and USFIA’s Board of Directors’ meeting July 13, 2018, in Washington, D.C. During the presentation, Lu shared findings from the latest study he conducted in collaboration with USFIA regarding the business outlook in the U.S. fashion industry, companies’ global sourcing trends and related trade policy issues. 

Publications

Leslie F. Goldstein, Judge Hugh M. Morris Professor Emeritus of Political Science, published a review essay, "The Coming of the Nixon Court by Earl Maltz," in American Political Thought, Vol. 7 (summer 2018), pages 525-529.

Heinz-Uwe Haus, professor of theatre, is the author of the book Heinz-Uwe Haus on Culture and Politics, published in July by Cambridge Scholars Publishing, Newcastle upon Tyne, U.K., The texts (co-edited by Daniel Meyer-Dinkgräfe) were written on different occasions: political conferences, academic symposia, directing concepts. The author was one of the voices of the civic movement (Demokratischer Aufbruch/Democratic Awakening) credited with being instrumental in the collapse of communism in East Germany. In addition as a leading theatre director, his thinking and action have always combined politics and theatre and the arts overall. In this book, Haus provides a narrative of the context before German unification, unification itself and the aftermath of unification across the decades since. He explores the difficulties on the way, from the perspective of the insider. Haus then widens the context from post-unification Germany to encompass issues of broader current relevance, such as Europe, America and Islam. Theatre provides the conceptual framework for this wide-ranging debate. In addition, he published an essay, "Heritage and Contemporary Option: Notes on Richard Zipser's memoir From Oberlin to Ostberlin," in Lumina Lina, New York, An XXII/Nr.2, June 2018, pages 65-68.

Honors

Alumnus W. Robert Knechel, who earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting at UD in 1977, received an honorary doctorate in June from BI Norwegian School of Business, the largest business school in Norway and the second largest in Europe. He received the honor in recognition of his significant contributions to the field of accounting. He also gave a lecture, titled “Who Do You Trust? Auditing and the (Political) Economy,” prior to receiving the award. Knechel is currently the Frederick E. Fisher Eminent Scholar and director of the International Accounting and Auditing Center at the University of Florida.
