REDCAP

What is REDCap?

REDCap (Research Electronic Data Capture) is a secure web application for building and managing online surveys and databases for research projects. REDCap was developed by Vanderbilt University and is used by over two-thousand institutions around the world. Key features include:

  • A web interface for creating instruments, capturing data, and reporting.
  • User created data validation rules.
  • Field level logging for auditing and quality assurance.
  • Convenient export to .csv, SPSS, SAS, and Stata formats.

REDCap is great for projects of any size. It makes it easy to setup simple online surveys, and to manage complex projects securely using features like configurable instrument-level user permissions, data access groups for multi-site projects, an off-line first mobile application, and more.

How do I get access to use REDCap for a project?

Access to REDCap at CHS is available (upon request) to all college faculty who would like to use it, and anyone who works with them. To request access, please complete this form. Someone will reach out to you shortly to provide access and instructions to help you get started.

Training materials are available to anyone interested in REDCap.

How much does it cost to use?

Use of REDCap is free, and support is provided based on availability of resources: there are hundreds of projects and users, and limited support staff. Using the support documentation and free regularly scheduled training sessions is recommended. Projects that allocate funding for REDCap support receive prioritized support, including (but not limited to) the development and management of data, data piping to and from other servers, management of subject recruitment and logistics, and other details.

Is there support or training for REDCap?

CHRC data analysts provide training to researchers regarding data management best practices and training on building a REDCap project and how to properly maintain REDCap projects for the lifespan of your study. Proper data management practices need to be implemented to comply with various funding agency requirements; we can help you to learn all about this to be compliant. We encourage all new REDCap users to review REDCap training materials before attempting to build any REDCap projects.
