Publications

The University’s Partnership for Healthy Communities (PHC) recently shared its Year in Review for 2024. This edition highlights collective achievements from the partnership that contribute toward advancing health equity through impactful initiatives and collaborations over the past year, including new team leaders, a revitalized PHC Steering Committee, an enhanced website experience and improved communication strategies. “Of course, some things have not changed,” said Jennifer Horney, director of PHC and founding director and professor of the Epidemiology Program. “This includes our commitment to envisioning healthy, thriving communities for all Delawareans through service learning, scholarship and research.”

Presentations

London McGill, a second-year doctoral student in the Medical Sciences Ph.D. program, presented at the American Association for Cancer Research (ACCR) Special Conference in Boston on Sept. 17, 2024. McGill presented research on a patient-first approach using CRISPR-directed gene editing as an augmentative therapy for the treatment of pancreatic ductile adenocarcinoma. McGill has worked closely on this research with mentor Eric Kmiec, founder and executive director of the Gene Editing Institute at ChristianaCare.

"AACR offered the opportunity for translational research to shine through with much interaction between bench scientists and clinicians,” said McGill. “It was very eye-opening to see where the field of pancreatic cancer research truly stands, which really drives my desire to push forward on my research even more. The insight gained through questions and interactions from others during my presentation is incredibly valuable and gives me external perspective on what is yet to come."

Honors

The Partnership for Healthy Communities HEALTH (Health Engagement Access Learning Teaching Humanity) for All program was awarded a 2024 I Partner with My Public Library Award in recognition of the program’s collaboration with the Route 9 Library and Innovation Center in New Castle, Delaware. Program Manager Christine G. Sowinski and Heather M. Milea, clinical lead, have worked with the Route 9 Library and the New Castle County (Delaware) Government Library to develop programming that improves access to holistic care and addresses health disparities in the community.
