The doctoral program in the University of Delaware Department of Kinesiology and Applied Physiology (KAAP) is ranked fifth in the United States, based on a 2020 review and evaluation by the National Academy of Kinesiology (NAK). UD KAAP’s ranking is up eight spots from the previous ranking announced in 2015.
“KAAP is a dream department with world-class researchers and dedicated teachers who are committed to the discovery and dissemination of new knowledge, the training of the next generation of scholars and ultimately translating our research/education to improve the human condition,” said John Jeka, KAAP chairman.
The rankings reflect data collected about the program’s faculty and students, taking into account productivity, funding and visibility. This is the fourth review conducted by the NAK, each representing five years of data. The calendar years of 2015-2019 are included in this year’s review.
Jeka said the improved ranking reflects the quality of the graduate program in KAAP. “We have 20 research labs in KAAP, most of which are funded with federal grants, which means that our faculty are among the very best in their field, which translates into attracting high quality students,” he said. “It indirectly affects undergraduate students who have many opportunities to apply what they learn in the classroom to the research lab.”
The vibrant research atmosphere in the College of Health Sciences also encourages departments to work together across disciplines, Jeka said. KAAP has active collaborations with the Department of Physical Therapy and the Biomedical Engineering program.
“The development of the STAR campus through the leadership of Dean Matt has made KAAP a very desirable place for faculty hires,” Jeka said. “We have senior faculty in KAAP that are extremely supportive of young faculty, providing mentorship and opportunities for collaboration.”
