Program launches Thursday, Nov. 6

University of Delaware researchers — including faculty, postdoctoral scholars and graduate students — are invited to register for a program designed to strengthen their ability to communicate their work to broader audiences, fostering greater understanding and appreciation of UD research and its impact.

A recent survey of UD researchers showed strong interest in learning new communication approaches, tools and methods. Many also expressed a desire to engage more effectively with journalists, legislators, and even family and friends about their work.

This free program, originally made possible by a grant from the Unidel Foundation, is offered by the Research Office and the Office of Communications and Marketing, in partnership with the Provost’s Office, Graduate College, Department of Communication, Center for Science, Ethics and Public Policy, IT–Academic Technology Services, and the NSF-funded Accelerating Research Translation (ART) program at UD.

The program begins with an in-person kickoff event on Thursday, Nov. 6, from 9:30 a.m.–noon, in Room 501, FinTech Innovation Hub, STAR Campus. The remainder of the training will be completed online through Canvas in a self-paced format, concluding by Friday, Jan. 23, 2026.

Participation in the kickoff, featuring sessions led by the Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University and by UD’s research communications team, counts toward the certificate of completion. Additional requirements include completing several online modules selected from the following topics and presenting your research in a public forum:

  • Communicating Your Research: Make the World Your Audience

  • Insights from Research on Communicating Research

  • Preparing for a Media Interview

  • Social Media for Researchers

  • How Visuals Can Help You Tell Your Story

  • Ethical Communication

  • Writing for The Conversation

  • How to Speak So People Want to Listen (and other LinkedIn Learnings)

Registration is required at this weblink by Oct. 30; please note that seating is limited, and this program fills up quickly.

Survey results from the previous two cohorts show that the program significantly improved participants’ confidence and skills in communicating research across platforms — from articles and web features to social media.
