Imani Goffney of the University of Maryland will present on creating equitable math classrooms

Join University of Delaware’s College of Education and Human Development (CEHD) for a colloquium with Imani Goffney, assistant professor in the Department of Teaching and Learning, Policy and Leadership at the University of Maryland, from 1:50 to 2:50 p.m. on Nov. 12 in room 205 of Willard Hall Education Building.

Using the context of the film Black Panther and pedagogical research in math teaching and learning, Goffney will discuss how educators can transform math classrooms into equitable and empowering spaces for all students. Pedagogical strategies will include connecting math tasks to problems of social justice, valuing and making space for students’ cultural identities and interests and using “rough draft talk,” a pedagogical strategy developed by CEHD Distinguished Professor in Teacher Education, Amanda Jansen.

Goffney’s colloquium is part of a year-long series hosted by CEHD’s School of Education. Speakers both internal and external to UD share their research and engage with faculty and students.

The colloquium is free and open to the public. Audience members are also welcome to participate in a discussion with the speaker following the colloquium.
