Awards

Laura Helton, assistant professor of English, has been awarded a summer stipend from the National Endowment for the Humanities to work on her book project, “The Making of African-American Archives, 1910-1950.” Helton, who had an earlier career as an archivist and who specializes in American literature and history of the 20th century with an emphasis on African American print culture and public humanities, is examining the emergence of African American archives and libraries. Also a faculty member in UD’s Center for Material Culture Studies, she is one of the organizers of a conference, “Black Bibliographia: Print/Culture/Art,” which will be held on campus April 26-27.

Amanda Jansen, professor in the School of Education, was recently awarded a $600,000 National Science Foundation (NSF) grant to develop a professional development experience for university faculty who work in mathematics education. She shares the award with colleagues Sarah Sword, Michael Young and Albert Cuoco. The project, “Focus on Inquiry and Equity in Mathematics for Education Faculty,” will begin with a summer workshop for 20 university faculty to examine and reflect on the kinds of research questions that mathematicians ask and how social inequities based on race, gender or ethnicity shape mathematics education and the kinds of questions that students ask. When the faculty begin the 2019-20 academic year, they will work to implement ideas from the summer workshop into their own courses for future teachers. Jansen is a mathematics educator who conducts research on students’ engagement in mathematics classrooms and teachers’ learning from their reflections on their own practice. She is invested in continually improving UD’s elementary mathematics teacher education courses through research and development work. For more about her work, visit her faculty webpage.
