Faculty development workshop

June 2 workshop to look at moving forward in mid-career

Spaces are still available for a faculty development workshop, “Writing Your Next Chapter: How to Find Your Mojo and Move Forward at Mid-Career,” scheduled for University of Delaware faculty on Friday, June 2, at the Perkins Student Center.

Mindi Thompson, head coach and certified workshop consultant for the National Center for Faculty Development and Diversity (NCFDD) will lead the workshop, which is designed for faculty undergoing a transition, which includes moving from tenure-track to being tenured, moving from associate to full professor, taking on a new area of research or scholarship, assuming new or different roles, developing new teaching expertise, moving into broader public spaces or cultivating a public voice.

Participants will learn how to focus their professional activities to achieve the best results and outcomes.

The workshop will meet from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., in the Rodney Room of the Perkins Student Center. The morning will include a “Writing Your Next Chapter” workshop, and the afternoon will feature a “Create a Plan for Your Summer!” workshop. A continental breakfast and lunch are included.

Spaces are limited, but some are still available. Register online here.

Mid-career faculty commonly describe a range of rank-specific challenges including:

• Managing time in the face of increased service and administrative responsibilities,

• Working long hours but making little progress on their research agenda,

• An absence of mentoring to help navigate the posttenure landscape,

• Feeling unsupported in their desire for work-family balance and

• Missing the passion, drive and clarity they once held for their intellectual projects.

In the “Writing Your Next Chapter” workshop, the most common issues mid-career faculty face will be outlined, and participants will be provided with strategies for identifying where they are stuck and how to move forward in their intellectual projects.

Specifically, participants will:

• Learn the most common challenges mid-career faculty face,

• Identify the specific technical errors, psychological obstacles and external challenges that are holding them back and

• Create an individualized diagnostic plan to move forward.

This workshop is cosponsored by the vice provost for diversity, UD-ADVANCE, the College of Arts and Sciences and the College of Engineering.
