- Credited with inventing the field of "Philosophy and Popular Culture." Research focuses on unconventional topics: time travel, artificial intelligence and evolutionary theory.
- Specializes in metaphysics, the philosophy of language, philosophy and pop culture and ethics. Hanley examines certain controversial topics: ethics, abortion, capital punishment, warfare, affirmative action and legal interpretation.
- Writes and records music under the stage name Gourmet Rapport. Music is a collection of songs about philosophy.
- Author of the books "South Park and Philosophy" and "The Metaphysics of Star Trek." Editor of the "Blackwell Guide to Philosophy of Language."
