Areas of Expertise

  • Studies how global commerce has shaped American politics and economics, both domestically and in US foreign relations.
  • Author of Trading Freedom: How Trade with China Defined Early America. Current work examines the emergence of the American “businessman” as a powerful political identity.
  • Serves as co-chair of the Legacies of Enslavement and Dispossession at UD Committee, part of the UD Antiracism Initiative, developing new research into the history of racial inequality and slavery in Delaware.
  • Can speak to early US history, the history of globalization, finance, and international trade (including opium smuggling) and the history of slavery and migration.
