Areas of Expertise
- Conversant in obesity, food policy, community nutrition, as well as the value and limitations of supermarkets, farmers markets and corner stores or bodegas.
- Work includes a focus on communities where access to fresh fruits, vegetables and other healthy foods is limited. These so-called food deserts are often urban or rural areas where grocery stores are not within close walking or driving distance.
- Karpyn developed and lead research and evaluation efforts in education and the social sciences, particularly in low-income communities.
- Featured in the movie Food Frontiers, which showcases six projects from around the United States that are increasing access to healthy food in varied ways.
