Areas of Expertise

  • Studies the design and operation of disaster warning systems with an emphasis on mobile and smart warning systems.
  • Can discuss the social and behavioral responses to a disaster, including how households manage the risk of hurricanes, tornadoes and floods. Can also speak about how people perceive and make decisions about hazards, warnings and evacuation orders.
  • Expert on U.S. disaster policy and organizational systems, and has worked with agencies and private companies to integrate disaster science data and insights into operations including the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), Centers for Disease Control (CDC), National Weather Service(NWS), National Institute for Standard and Technology(NIST) and numerous State Emergency Management agencies.
