The University of Delaware has named Peter P. McLaughlin, Jr. the new Director of the Delaware Geological Survey (DGS) and Delaware’s State Geologist. DGS serves as the state’s principal source of objective scientific information on Delaware’s geology, water resources, natural hazards, and related maps and data.

The appointment, effective August 1, was announced by Fabrice Veron, Dean of the College of Earth, Ocean, and Environment, who cited McLaughlin’s long record of applied research, collaborative leadership, and public service as key strengths for guiding the Survey’s next chapter.

“A UD alumnus himself, Pete has been with DGS since 1999, and most recently served as a senior scientist. He also holds a secondary faculty appointment in the Department of Earth Sciences,” said Veron. “His research has focused on the geology and aquifer systems of the Delaware Coastal Plain, with applications to groundwater availability, resource planning and geological mapping. As director, Pete will lead efforts to expand access to maps and digital tools, strengthen collaboration with state agencies and communities, and support the Survey’s staff and public service mission.”

McLaughlin said he is excited to step into the role of Director for DGS.

“We have an outstanding team at DGS, and I am committed to supporting their work while ensuring we continue to deliver high-quality science that is practical, accessible, and trusted by the people and organizations who depend on it,” McLaughlin said.

McLaughlin’s work also includes regional research with neighboring states, oversight of well logging and geologic coring programs, and leadership of efforts to preserve and modernize access to geologic and hydrologic data.

A graduate of UD, McLaughlin earned his bachelor’s degree in geology in 1984. He completed his doctorate at Louisiana State University in 1989 and worked for a decade in the private sector before joining DGS. He grew up in Dover, Delaware, and brings to the role a deep familiarity with the state’s geology, communities, and environmental needs.

McLaughlin succeeds David R. Wunsch, who served as State Geologist and Director of DGS from 2011 to 2025. Wunsch brought to DGS extensive experience from earlier leadership roles at the New Hampshire Geological Survey, the Kentucky Geological Survey, and the National Ground Water Association and was widely respected for his work at the intersection of science, public service, and groundwater policy. His leadership strengthened DGS’s scientific programs, broadened its connections across state and federal agencies, and enhanced the technology that supports its ability to serve the public.

About the Delaware Geological Survey

DGS is a State-funded unit of UD that conducts geologic and hydrologic research, service, and exploration for the benefit of the citizens of the First State.  The mission of the DGS is to provide objective earth science information, advice, and service to its stakeholders, the citizens, policy makers, industries, and educational institutions of Delaware. From mapping groundwater sources to studying geologic hazards, the Survey provides the kinds of information that help Delawareans live safely and plan wisely in a state shaped by natural systems and ongoing change.
