Founded in 2009, the Office of General Counsel (OGC) manages and coordinates legal services and guidance across a wide range of areas affecting the University of Delaware. The Office also oversees compliance and advises on policy matters, helping ensure the University operates effectively and in accordance with the law.
We handle the full range of legal issues for the University, including counsel and advice to the President and Board of Trustees, employment matters, litigation and other adversarial proceedings, corporate and business transactions, student matters, and compliance with pertinent federal and state laws. The office engages and supervises outside counsel for assistance with complex legal matters and litigation.
All administrative offices and academic units of the University and all individuals performing University functions should feel free to contact the office for legal assistance involving their University duties and responsibilities.
Our Mission
The Office of General Counsel manages and coordinates legal services for the University of Delaware.
The Office serves the University by:
- educating University personnel about legal requirements and risks to prevent or reduce liabilities and disputes;
- providing legal advice to ensure compliance with legal requirements, and reducing exposure to legal risks;
- representing the University as legal counsel in judicial and governmental proceedings, and advocating and defending its interests in those proceedings;
- coordinating the provision of all legal services for the University, whether through the Office or outside legal counsel, to ensure efficiency, containment of costs, and reliability of service.
The Office’s three objectives, always, are to provide the highest quality of service, to manage legal matters in a timely and responsive fashion, and to observe the highest standards of professional ethics and integrity.
