  • Wednesday, January 21

  • Thursday, January 22

  • Friday, January 23

  • Saturday, January 24

This is the only timeline to consider entry into the major for undergraduate applicants, please plan accordingly.

To prepare for the undergraduate audition, review the guidance provided below.

The application priority deadline is December 1. The audition request form will be accessible to applicants once they have been considered provisionally admissible to the University of Delaware by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Audition request forms and/or recorded submissions must be received no later than January 15. The application deadline is December 1. The audition request form will only be accessible to applicants who have been deemed provisionally admissible by the University. Therefore, applicants are encouraged to prioritize submission of their application as early as possible to allow opportunity for access to the audition request form, upload of recorded audition materials, or the widest preference for scheduling their in-person audition.

Applicants who cannot attend in-person should select the option for recorded video audition and submit by uploading to their student portal following the completion of the audition request form.

Familiarize yourself with the specific requirements for your instrument, voice, or composition area on the audition repertoire page. If you have any questions or concerns about the requirements, please email the School of Music (musicadmissions@udel.edu), or faculty member in your studio area.

Fall 2025 — Application deadline January 15

For applicants in Music Composition, MTPE is part of the composition interview process.

Music applicants who select an in-person audition will take a Music Theory Placement Exam (MTPE) during their audition day at the end of January. Applicants with a recorded submission will take the MTPE at a later date following enrollment.

The MTPE is not an admissions requirement. It is a brief diagnostic assessment that also allows prospective majors to meet a member of the music theory faculty and to learn more about academic courses in music theory at the University of Delaware. The MTPE provides the theory faculty with information about the incoming class that is used when designing the first-year theory courses. Finally, the MTPE enables theory faculty to encourage students regarding their readiness for theory coursework and to suggest areas for practice prior to arriving. In short, we hope you find the MTPE to be a welcoming experience that sets you up for success in the innovative, student-centered music theory courses at UD.

During the MTPE, students will be asked to sing short patterns, melodies, and rhythms. No background in music theory is required or expected, and the entire appointment usually takes less than five minutes.

Music education applicants: All music education applicants will be required to interview with the Music Education faculty as part of their audition. For recorded auditions, this will be in addition to your video interview with studio faculty as part of the audition experience (below) and take place via Zoom.

Applicants who select the recorded audition option have an opportunity to meet with studio faculty for a video interview via Zoom based on the faculty panel and student’s availability. Video interviews are brief and intended as a mutually valuable two-way conversation. It is a chance for us to learn about each applicant and their goals, but also as a place for students to ask questions and to learn more about the music major experience.

Internal Transfer Applicants
The only opportunity to audition for admission or change of major will take place during scheduled in-person dates no later than January 21–24, 2026, or recorded submission submitted by January 15. View the audition repertoire for specific requirements.

External Transfer Applicants
External transfer applicants, or those transitioning from the Associates in Arts program may apply to the School of Music to attend the in-person auditions in late January or submit a recorded audition. The audition request form will be accessible to applicants once they have been considered provisionally admissible to the University of Delaware by the Office of Undergraduate Admissions. Applicants who select recorded submission will receive access to upload recorded audition materials to the music portfolio within the customized My Blue Hen Home student portal.

Applicants who wish to transfer general education credit may access the transfer credit matrix via the Transfer Admissions page. Music course work will require a separate transfer credit evaluation. If applicable, please send unofficial transcripts for music coursework and course syllabi for music courses to facilitate the transfer credit process to musicadmissions@udel.edu as early as possible to allow time for review and planning.
