Jazz & Improvisation

Jazz & Improvisation
Jazz & Improvisation have been important to the musical landscape of University of Delaware for decades. Consisting of big bands, combos, academic classes, and private lessons, the Jazz program has offered students the opportunity to dive deeper into this uniquely American art form with experienced faculty from the New York, Philadelphia, and Baltimore jazz communities.
Our faculty provides diverse perspectives on the history and performance of jazz and its tributaries and creates a safe space for students to find their individual interests and musical voices. Overall, the program cultivates both the technical skills and artistic expression necessary for success in the vibrant world of jazz music.
Student Opportunities
The UD Jazz Program provides students with hands-on learning through performing in ensembles, attending master classes and festivals, and affiliated faculty encourage students to reach out to local communities in order to foster engagement, education, and professional employment. Students are provided with experiences working with internationally known guest artists, traveling to international jazz festivals, and creating spaces and groups to work out ideas on their own.
