Music Industry Studies
Music Industry STudies
The Music Industry Studies program trains students for both the for-profit and non-profit sectors of the music industry. The Music Industry Studies degrees prepare students for leadership and executive management in leading music businesses and performing arts organizations — and for graduate and professional-degree study leading to the same.
Students in the School of Music can earn the following:
- Bachelor of Arts in Music with Music Industry Concentration — Provides broad coverage of music combined with a liberal arts education applicable to a variety of career interests.
- Music Industry 4+1 B.A./M.B.A. – An academic pathway from the B.A. in music with music industry concentration. See the See the UD Catalog for more information.
- Minor in Music Industry Studies — Students from other colleges and departments can also earn the minor in music industry studies.
Student Opportunities
The music industry concentration features four core music industry courses complemented by business courses in the Lerner College of Business & Economics and communication courses in the College of Arts and Sciences. For non-music majors, the program offers an extensive selection of music electives, from academic courses to performance opportunities in an array of instrumental and vocal ensembles.
Graduates from all degree and minor programs have acquired positions with organizations such as Universal Music Group, Curb|Word Music, Reservoir Media, Crush Music, CAA, the Harry Fox Agency, Live Nation, Clair Global, the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the San Francisco Orchestra, and Gelfand, Rennert & Feldman, LLC.
Some music industry students have gone on to be admitted to graduate study in the Belmont University Music Industry M.B.A. program, the Berklee College Music Production M.M. program in Valencia, Spain, the NYU Performing Arts Administration program, The Milano School at The New School, the Vanderbilt Law School, the New York Law School, the Villanova Law School, and have completed our own Music Industry 4+1 MBA program in the UD Lerner College of Business.
Music Industry Internship
One of the core music industry courses is the Music Industry Internship. The internship is ideally taken during a summer or winter session, or during a strategic fall or spring semester, as students are directed toward, and encouraged to serve with, prominent music-business and performing-arts sponsors nationwide. Students have served internships with organizations such as Sony Music Entertainment, Warner Music Group, Live Nation, MTV, Clair Global, Jazz at Lincoln Center, the Metropolitan Opera, the Philadelphia Orchestra, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
Admission Requirements
Students who wish to pursue the B.A. in music with music industry concentration, or the music industry 4+1 M.B.A. must fulfill the requirements for admission to the School of Music including an audition and performance with vocal or on a primary instrument. All students work with the School of Music academic advisor on course selection and registration for the music industry studies degree and minor programs.
Non-music majors who wish to pursue the minor in music industry studies typically take MUSC101 Music Appreciation and MUSC105 Fundamentals of Music (the option 1 theory requirement) and must pass those courses with at least a B+ before declaring the minor. Completing the music industry studies minor takes no less than four semesters with the required internship typically completed during a summer term.
